After a lot of observation and listening to the children while they're playing, we came up with a project. This time our project is "Bringing Fairy Tales to Life." We started our project by turning the pretend center into a puppet show or fairy tale show with different outfits that children can try on and perform. We stocked our library with books with tales from different part of the world. We have blocks and manipulative toys to support children understanding of the project. We did special activities such as making porridge after reading Goldilocks, potato taste test after reading the enormous potato. making crow crayon etching art after reading the crow's tale and creating our own characters for our castle story time! In between, we created arts with different mediums and wrote children's opinions on different stories. The books that we read... The letters that we learned...

On our last day of 2019 before the winter break, we had a little party. We've been reading the Gingerbread Cowboy by Janet Squires so we've decided that we're going to make Gingerbread Cowboy. The children had lots of fun watching Ms. Alanna carved the dough into a cowboy and used the rest of the dough shaped into their favorite cookie cutters. But just like in the story, after we baked the gingerbread cowboy, it ran away! So we had to look everywhere in the building and catch it so we can eat it! Fortunately, we caught the gingerbread cowboy at the front desk! We ate it and it was delicious! Our music teacher Ms. Nora came once a month to sing some songs and play some musical instruments. In November, Ms. Nora brought chimes, personal drums, maracas and scarfs for us to play. In December, she brought ribbon sticks, scarfs, jingle bells and wood block. She also brought a snowman so we can sing and dance with it! On November 14th, we had our second Parent-Child Class and we had guest speakers from Minneapolis Public Schools. We learned all about the different schools, processes to send our children to kindergarten and questions we had about schools in general. It was a good informational session and we learned a lot. There's one day in a year where children wanted to come to school in costumes. We called it "Book-O-Ween" day where children come to school in their favorite book character. On this day, we had special snacks with special activities and filled the day with fun and joy! . After the children got to know each other and the teacher better, we moved on to the next circle in their community which was their family. This few months, we've been talking about who are in our family, things we do with our family and our relationship with our siblings, our mom, dad and our extended family. We explored books that discuss family relationship to help children understand and we also used art and technology. The books that we read... The letters that we learned... On October 15th, we went to the Bell Museum in St. Paul. We saw the stars, constellations, planets at the planetarium, explored many different animals at the touch and feel exhibit and marveled at the dioramas. We loved the field trip and learned a lot from it! On September 26th, we had our first Parent-Child class for the school year. We had help from U of M Health & Nutrition Program Educator, Ms. Selah Michele. She talked about how to help children try new food and include them in snack prep. She also presented parents with tips for providing healthy snacks and answered personal questions from parents. We concluded the session by making our own snack: fruit salsa with cinnamon chips. Parents went home with a few recipes that they can try at home with their children. Like every year, this year we collaborated with MacPhail Music. Ms. Nora, the music teacher, introduced us to many different musical instruments and songs. She'd visit us once a month. This time, she brought maracas and cymbals. It's the beginning of another school year. We welcome all children both morning and afternoon classes. We're happy to have you with us. This time of the year, children are learning to be with other children. They also learn the teacher's expectations, classroom routines, and rules. There's so much to learn so we made them all fun through play, art, science, and stories. The books we read... The letters we learned... |
