The month of May is Native American Heritage month so on May 31st, we celebrated Native American Heritage Day. One of our student who has a native American decent came to school in her Jingle Dancer outfit. We actually read a book called "Jingle Dancer" by Cynthia Leitich Smith about a native American girl who turned to her family and community to help her find enough jingles so she can dance at the powwow. We made rain sticks as our art for the day using recycled paper towel rod, aluminum foil, seeds and beautifully decorated by the children. For our snack, we had wild rice soup with bread, yum! Toward the end of the day, we watched powwow celebration where we can see the real jingle dancers perform with the feather's fan, colorful scarfs and of course the sound of the jingles.
