Continuing from the last project (food), we explored how our food grow. We started with picking up what are we going to grow. The children picked watermelon, kale, carrot and sun flower. We added marigold because it protected the plants from pest. The project started with reading "A Bad Case of Stripes," where we learned the powerful lima beans. We explored about what food grows in a garden. Then we read "Lola Plant A Garden," where we started planting our seeds in cups and write our own "Garden Poem" just like Lola. While we're reading "The Curious Garden," the children continues to tend and care for their cup of seeds. We asked them about what they wanted to know about gardening. The next read was "Tops & Bottoms," the seeds started to turn into sprouts then we talked about vegetables or fruits that edible on the bottom, middle and top and we made a venn diagram of Bear and Hare. The next book we read was "The Enormous Potato," we talked about the different food that we can make from potato then we had a potato food test with chips, mashed and fries, the winner was... CHIPS! We also did a little germ experiment using potato slices and see what germs in different places will grow and what are they look like. It didn't turn out as expected, there were not a lot of changes that we saw. This week was also the week of "Mother's day," so we made flower using beads and pipe cleaner and write a note about what we love about our mother. "The Good Seed," was one of the book that the children really like. We had writing activities titled "I am a good seed because..." some kids said that they were bad, silly and funny seeds. The following week we read "Hey, Little Ant," we followed the story with a writing activity "To Squish or Not To Squish." Although some kids thought they should squish the ant, but read what they say when asked what would you do if you were small like ant. After the fun experience with the ant, we read about the worm in "Diary of a Worm." This time we made macaroni necklace (like the worm in a the book), we made our own comic (like the one in the book) then we made another venn diagram of the worm and the kids. Meanwhile the children kept caring, watering and tending their cups of sprouts. In our last week, we read "Never Ever Shout in a Zoo," since we had a zoo field trip. We wrote and drew about our favorite zoo animal and venn diagram of animal who live on land and water. We also compared our hand prints to animals hand prints such as elephant, seal, penguin and more.
