We have been talking about food in the past few months. The children's interest in food started when we read "Bunny Cakes" and "The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza." Then we just built up their interest into a project. The children came up with things that they want to know and learn about food such as what is healthy food? food that are good or bad for our bodies and the many different food such as fruits and vegetables. Our pretend center continued to be a grocery store where children can buy and sell food, our library are filled with books about food both fiction and non fiction. The art and writing activities that we did reflected from the books that we read or exploring the questions that the children had regarding food. Through this project, we also did a lot of cooking activities. We made ginger bread cowboy, we made vegetable soup, we made kale chips and we made bee bim bop. We cut open fruits and vegetables and examined them under microscopes and magnifying glasses then write or draw our observations. For art activities, we made fruits from plastic cups, we use vegetables as stamps, we drew life still fruits and we made our own plate of foods using small art materials then we created art with paint in the snow. Toward our International food bazaar day, the children helped made decorations for the party. They were so excited about the event. One of our writing activities was to write a postcard from the belly of the wolf to our parents (we read a book called The Wolf, The Duck and The Mouse where the duck and the mouse live in the wolf's belly after they were eaten so if the children were eaten by the wolf what would they say to their parents from the belly of the wolf).
In this project, we also learn about food group and food pyramid. We created food pyramid where children cut pictures of food from newspaper advertisements and put them in the right food groups. Check out the pictures !
