Friends, Kindness, and Community: Our February in Preschool

2/27/2026

February was a full and meaningful month in our preschool classroom! As the winter season continued, our class theme centered around community. What it means to belong to one, how we care for the people around us, and the many ways we can help one another each day.

We spent a lot of time talking about our classroom expectations, practicing kindness, taking turns, and learning how our actions can help our classroom run smoothly. It has been wonderful watching the children grow more confident in these routines and truly take ownership of being helpful classroom citizens.

The children had many opportunities to explore the idea of community through play and conversation. Our morning class worked together to create a map of their dream community, carefully deciding what places it should include. There were thoughtful suggestions like parks, libraries, homes, rivers, and even a few imaginative additions! It was a great way for them to think about what makes a community special and how different places help people.

Our afternoon class preschool friends also took some imaginative “bus rides” around their community during circle time and dramatic play. As we “traveled,” the children excitedly pointed out places they might see in a neighborhood; grocery stores, schools, fire stations, playgrounds, and more. These interactive conversations helped build both language skills and an understanding of the world around them.

Of course, February wouldn’t be complete without celebrating friendship. Our Friendship Party was a joyful highlight of the month. The children practiced sharing, exchanging kind words, and celebrating the friendships they have built in our classroom. It was a sweet reminder of how important these early social connections are.

As February wrapped up, both our AM and PM classes began their next round of assessments. These assessments help guide our teaching and give us insight into the wonderful progress children are making in language, early math, and social development.

We also held our winter parent–teacher conferences, which are always such a valuable time to connect with families. Thank you to everyone who took the time to meet and talk about your child’s growth, strengths, and goals. These conversations help us continue working together to support each child’s development.

We were also excited to host our second Parent–Child class of the year, where we focused on the IGDI assessment and shared more about how we observe and support children’s learning. It is always such a joy to welcome families into the classroom space and learn alongside one another.

While our broader community has experienced some challenging moments recently, we have continued to focus on creating a classroom environment filled with warmth, care, and positivity. We are grateful that so many families see our classroom as a safe and supportive space for their children. It has also been especially wonderful to see all of our friends back together again, bringing their laughter and energy back into our daily routines.
As we look ahead to March, we are excited for the changing season and all the new learning it will bring. With spring just around the corner, we look forward to exploring new themes, spending more time moving and learning together, and continuing to grow as a caring classroom community.

Thank you for being such an important part of our preschool family!
